Heroes come in many different guises. And it's just as important to have a good complement of role-players on a team as it is to have a legitimate star presence. Teams that have a good unit of secondary players are the ones that are usually successful. "Bench depth" is a much sought commodity.
But of course, it's the superstars who get all the limelight. It would be ridiculous to expect anything else. But on April 5th as the season draws to a climax, it's time for those with star status to share the spotlight a little.
April 5th is Unsung Player Day.
As I explained a little while ago,
Yup, I'm declaring April 5th ‘Unsung Player Day'... we should recognize the guys who toil and work hard every day, for no recognition. Well, today's your day. In reality, these guys are just as responsible for making the NBA what it is today - every team needs role-players, guys to come on and give that valuable 2-5 minutes. Without them, there is no NBA. I would encourage NBA bloggers to put up an ‘unsung player' on their blog on April 5th. (With Malice, March 14th)
Now it's nearly April 5th again, and I encourage NBA blogs & sports blogs alike to participate in shining a light on the guys who help make up the NBA, who help make the game what it is today.
What's required?
A role player who gives his all in the 2-5 minutes he gets per game (try to be definitely under 10 minutes). Someone who doesn't get a lot of recognition. If people send me a link to their piece on the day, I'll have a running thread-piece on here where I'll link to each and every piece.
Guys like LA's Shannon Brown... averaging 4 minutes a game with the Lakers, it's a slight downturn from his career average of just shy of 10 minutes per. But nearly every game he hits the floor, you can expect a highlight-reel quality dunk from him. For a guy who stands 6'4", he has absolutely amazing hops. Only 23 years old, he was acquired in the trade of Radmanovic (along with Adam Morrison).
Brown's got amazing athleticism, and I really hope that LA retains his services... kid could be a good part of a special team.
